Several of our F.O.P. members are attending the 63rd Biennial National Conference of the Grand Lodge Fraternal Order of Police. The conference which is taking place in Nashville, TN, will host a variety of committees from credentials reporting to trustees. New committee appointments, nominations, and installation of officers will also take place.

On Monday, July 25, 2017, CGPD honored retiring Lt. Bart Barta as he begins a well-deserved new phase of his life. After nearly 30 years as a Coral Gables Police Officer, with previous service at Atlanta PD, he was praised for his outstanding work in law enforcement.   Lt. Bart was the youngest officer to ever be promoted to Sergeant at age 25, he served in the Narcotics Division at all three ranks, and was lastly Lt. of SIS while additionally serving as Acting Major of CID.

Lt. David Lemon made introductions and was followed by Chief Edward Hudak who presented Lt. Barta with his honorary major badge. In addition, plaques were presented to Lt. Barta by his department, SIS, and the Florida Laundering Task Force.   In addition, Lt. Barta was instrumental in inspiring a new tool that facilitates communication between officers and residents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other intellectual disabilities. For those that are not aware, the wallet card is designed to help officers or first responders with communication with those with disabilities and the challenges they face.

Thank you to everyone, especially our retirees, who came out to support Lt. Barta. Thank you to his lovely family who was instrumental in supporting him the last thirty years. As we all know, the support of family is crucial in the life of law enforcement personnel.

Coral Gables' resident, Mrs. Martha Pearson, shows support for our officers by providing a wonderful lunch. It's not the first time Mrs. Pearson has shown her support for the Department and the F.O.P. by making sizable donations. It is uplifting for all of us to have our community support us in this manner.  Thank you Mrs. Pearson.

Retiree, Harry Picketing recently ran into Bruce Richards' son "David", while he was working an off-duty detail.   David said to say "hello" to all of his Dad's friends and his extended CGPD Police family, past and present.  David started at MDPD in '87 and he is retiring in January.  He's had a remarkable career at the County in Uniform Patrol, then Narcotics, and the majority of his career has been in CID in the Robbery Bureau.  He has worked many years as a Robbery Detective, including RID, STOP, and his current assignment to the Fugitive Task Force.  His son and daughter  graduated from College last month.  Bruce's grand daughter earned a full athletic scholarship and completed her Bachelors Degree while playing in NCAA Women's Basketball at Purdue University.  She is enrolling in a graduate program at the U of M.  When she graduates, Dave and his wife will relocate to the Melbourne area of Central Florida, where most of the family members and in-laws live.

Dave is a big man with a big heart, just like his Dad, and just shaking hands with him puts a smile on your face.  Harry has his business card and contact info if anyone wants to reach out to him.  He is also on Facebook as Dave Richards.

Coral Gables Bike Day took place on Sunday, February 28, 2016 from 11:00am to 3:00pm.  The FOP provided popcorn for all children as well as coloring books and crayons.

Our heartfelt thanks to the many Coral Gables' citizens who came to thank us for what we do.

We were happy to once again sit beside the great leadies from Baptist.  Thank you Officer Lago for helping us lift our equipment and for providing some muscle to put up and take down our tent.

Thank you to all the FOP members who took the time to enjoy a little bit of brotherhood with us and who shared an unbelievably great meal.

We had a great turnout of retirees - it's always a pleasure to see you all there.  And thank you to those who stayed behind to help us clean up.  Officer K. Rodriguez thank you for all your help.  Sgt. J. Hoff, thank you for taking on the task of transporting leftovers to our communications folks - hope they enjoyed.
